Catherine
Winney
Jan 4, 1941 — Jun 5, 2022
Yuma
With sadness and love, the family of Catherine Winney announce her passing on June 5, 2022, in Yuma, Arizona. Cathy died peacefully in the presence of her husband and son.
Cathy was preceded in death by her parents, John and Catherine (Phalen) Gardner, brother John Gardner, sister Elizabeth (Gardner) Sebeck.
Cathy is survived by her husband, Anthony Winney, son, Michael (Jennifer) DiPaolo, stepchildren Tina (Kevin) Robinson and Peter (Joan Laub) Winney; grandchildren Luke DiPaolo, Matthew DiPaolo, Sophia DiPaolo, and Isadore Robinson; sister-in-law Bonnie Olster, nephews and nieces John (Linda) Malloy, Dennis (Karen) Malloy, Colleen (David) Black, John Gardner, Heather Fuller and Susan (Phil) Mabb; and furry canine companion, Daniel.
Cathy was born on January 4, 1941, in Yonkers, New York and raised in beautiful rural Copake, New York. She returned to Yonkers to attend the Cochran School of Nursing at St. John's Riverside Hospital where she earned her RN. This began a lengthy and fulfilling career in nursing, most notably working in as an OB/GYN nurse at Saratoga Hospital in Saratoga Springs, New York and Women's Health Specialists in Yuma, Arizona. Cathy loved helping mothers bring their babies into the world.
As good as Cathy was as a nurse, she was even better at taking care of those closest to her. She was a devoted mother to her son, Michael. She often volunteered at his school, St. Clement's, including one year as president of the home school association.
Cathy was devoted to her husband, Anthony, for 40 years. The two were married just a few weeks shy of 20 years. They moved from their home in Saratoga Springs to Yuma to be closer to Cathy's two siblings in 1992. While in Yuma, Cathy also welcomed her mother into her home and took care of her for several years prior to her passing.
Cathy's Catholic faith was an ever-present part of her life. It shined forth in many ways, from her love of the University of Notre Dame to her service as a Eucharistic Minister.
The family would also like to thank Joen Painter for her support for Cathy during the past several years.
A funeral mass will be held on Saturday, June 18 at 10:00 at Cathy's home parish of St. John Neuman Catholic Church in Yuma.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Alzheimer's Association (www.alz.org).
