Obituary

Donald Eugene Gammon was called home to be with our Lord on July 22, 2024, after experiencing complications from Covid. Donald was born November 23, 1933, to parents Glen Francis Gammon and the former Mildred Evelyn Harris (Gammon), in Cherokee Oklahoma.

Donald grew up in Cherokee, spending much of his time visiting his aunt and uncle in Billings, Oklahoma. In addition to his parents, Donald shared his home with his younger brother Robert Glen Gammon, who remained his best friend throughout his life. It was during his youth that Donald discovered his love for music, performing for audiences showcasing his talent for singing and playing the cornet. Donald achieved many awards and accolades for his talents in the musical realm.

Donald graduated from Cherokee High School in 1951 and quickly volunteered to serve his beloved country in the US Army. Donald served in the army for two years before joining the US Air Force in which he served for almost 24 years at which time he retired with the rank of Senior Master Seargent. During his military tenure Donald served his country in various capacities and in various location assignments, which included stations in the US (San Antonio, Texas; Aurora, Colorado; Hebo, Oregon) and in Europe (Germany). Donald also served in the Vietnam War, being stationed in Phu Cat, where he was exposed to Agent Orange, which would cause him lifetime health issues.

In 1954 Donald married Doris Jeanette High. Together they would have four children: Polly, Donald jr., Mark, and Gerald Gammon. In 1970 Donald's marriage to Doris would end. In May of 1971 Donald would marry the former Beverly Jean Howard who brought two children of her own to the family: Tracy and Terry Howard.

Donald's propensity to serve continued in many organizations including the Grange and the United States Air Force Sergeant's Association, where he would become the International President in 1992.

After retirement, Donald and Beverly lived in San Antonio, Texas; Rockport, Texas; Corvalis, Oregon; and would eventually locate to Yuma, AZ, where Donald would return to work as a park manager of Cactus Gardens and Desert Paradise campgrounds. The couple would remain in Yuma after Donald's retirement from this position. Donald would continue to exercise his love for music in the choir of his church. When he wasn't singing, he could be found touring the parks he once managed, with his beloved pets Samantha and Sophie in tow, ready to share a quip or a story or two.

Survivors include his wife Beverly Gammon, his children Polly (Steve) Norberg, of Howard, Ohio; Rev. Dr. Gerald (Marian) Gammon of Warren, Ohio; Tracy McNeely of SanAntonio, Texas; and Terry (Donnell) Howard of Sulphur Springs, Texas; several grandchildren and great grandchildren.
