Obituary

Donald Alan Varney went home to be with the Lord February 8, 2018.  Donald was born May 18, 1939 to Harold and Ivy Varney in Santa Monica, CA. They later moved to Washington state  where he graduated from Bellingham High School. He is survived by his wife Maria Gloria Varney of 28 years, his four daughters, Dawn Marie Brown, Teresa (Tom) Davis, Sharon (James) Whittaker, and Lori Ann (Sean) Maury.  He also leaves his eight grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and his nieces, Claudia Jacquez, Blanca (Federico) Murillo, Chayito (Jose) Lugo, Cecy Bere (Victor) Valdez, Maria (Santiago) Viramontes and 10 grand nieces and nephews, with one on the way.  He leaves his very special Cousin Char (Patrick) Clelland.  They shared many special years and wonderful memories. Also leaving behind his Mother in Law, Sisters and Brothers in law with whom he loved and enjoyed spending time. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Harold Varney, two nephews Pete and Ron, one grandson, two cousins and numerous beloved aunts and uncles.  Don lived an active, adventurous life hiking and fishing, including deep sea fishing in the Sea of Cortez, with good friends, which he did every chance available.  He enjoyed camping, sightseeing with his wife, building wooden furniture, brilliant colors, mountain climbing, canoeing, and riding his Gold Wing motorcycle alongside his beloved brother.  With a keen sense of vocabulary and humor, he enjoyed playing practical jokes on his buddies and learning new words. He loved the outdoors and longed for life back in the Pacific NW with the rugged peaks, tall evergreens, and the scent of ocean hanging in the air. He thanked God for the beauty of His Creation and trusted Jesus. He enjoyed listening to Jazz, performing music.  He played the trumpet with the Grenediers Drum and Bugle Corp in Bremerton, WA and also with the Melody Men Dance Band where he played bass fiddle.  He got into the sky diving scene in the 1960's and 1970's.  On one particular jump, he played his trumpet while free falling! He loved adventure and doing things differently.  He had loyal friends and neighbors who spent his last days with him.  He loved his wife, adored his daughters, nieces and cousin Char.  And he was immensely proud of his grandchildren Jake, Ben, Stephanie, Charlie, Kaila, Alana, Joseph, Josh (who preceded him in Death), Gunnar, and great-grandsons Lukas and Will. He was a well-rounded guy who enjoyed adventure.  He is leaving a hole in the lives of those who loved him. When he passed, surrounded by family, it was a peaceful moment and he smiled as he left this earth.
