A Medaryville, Indiana native, Floyd was inducted into the NTPA Truck and Tractor Pulling Hall of Fame in 2009 after a career pulling first Modifieds and then Two-Wheel-Drive Trucks "Floyds Toy" in National and Hoosier State competition. Floyd switched from stock car racing to tractor pulling in early 1970's to better align his hobby with his farming responsibilities. After switching from the Mini division to a single and then a twin-engine Modified, he won in Fort Recovery, Ohio with the "Green Weenie" in 1979. "All the hot shots were pulling after me," he told The Puller Magazine in 1986, "so I went to bed after I pulled. They woke me up the next morning to tell me that I had won"
Constructed in 1985 from the "Green Weenie's" Chevrolet powerplants were Floyd's first pair of Two Wheel Drives, a "52 Chevy van and "81 Dodge Omni. They were named "Floyd's Toy I" and "II" and decorated in their owner's luck color Purple.
While in Yuma, Arizona Floyd's love of old vehicles continued with a '59 Mack Semi Truck with built in living quarters and dovetailed bed that he carried a custom built 3-wheel trike that he built himself. Not completely satisfied, he then decided to build a custom '53 Chevrolet pickup truck, painted with a green and pearl white two-tone paint scheme with purple pinstriping and a purple and grey interior. With a collection of cars and trucks, Floyd was a member of numerous car clubs in the Arizona and Southern California area (Nostalgia, Foothill Cruisers, Over the Hill Gang and the Desert Cruisers).
Floyd was recognized and will be remembered as a role model for strengthening the bond between pullers, spectators and car enthusiast from around the country. No matter his performance on a given night, the relatable, approachable showman with the exotic, colorful vehicles drew crowds and cheers and made fans into lifelong friends. Floyd never met a stranger and would talk to everyone he met.
Floyd left behind a great legacy; he will be incredibly missed.
"You can shed tears that he is gone, or you can smile because he has lived.".
