Obituary

James L. Osterholt, 83, of Yuma, passed away on April 2, 2019, in Yuma. Born Feb. 14, 1936, in Akron, Ohio, he was a police officer and veteran of the U.S. Navy. Services are pending. Sunset Vista Funeral Home is handling arrangements, including private cremation.

James served in the U.S. Navy from 1954 to June 1958. He was stationed at Nas, Guam, Philippines, Eva Kuni Japan and on the USS Lexington. His service included top service missions with the V-QI Squadron in the flight crew. While stationed at Sangle Point, Philippines his plane was shot down in the jungle where they engaged in hand to hand combat. In that skirmish two Americans were killed. James and 30 others were  picked up by rescue helicopter. Due to this James spent 45 days in the Sangle Philippines Hospital. At one point his parents, Lee and Betty Osterholt, were sent a telegram informing them that James was missing in action. This was due to James trading missions with a man by the name of Young. Young's plane was shot down in the Famosa Straights. There were sadly no survivors. James was honorably discharged after a tour on the USS Lexington C.D.A 16 in June 1958.

James is survived by his loving wife Jurlene and their large family including many grandchildren and great grand children.
