Obituary

Jerry Dean Roberts was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. He passed away on April 6, 2024, at 82, in his home in Yuma, Arizona.

Jerry was born to Fud and Kathryn Roberts on January 10, 1942, in Nowata, Oklahoma. The two had four children: Ted Roberts, Joyce Asmus, Jerry Roberts, and Bill Roberts. During his childhood, Jerry's family moved to Hood River, Oregon, where he grew up and graduated from Wy'East High School in 1960.

In November of 1960, Jerry enlisted in the U.S. Navy with friends Claude Hensen and Gary Mann on the buddy system. They served for four years.  During this time, he met his beautiful bride, Eunice Buysman, and the two were married on July 22, 1966. In 1970, they gave birth to their first daughter, Diane Marie, and two years later, in 1972, they gave birth to another daughter, Kari Ann. In 1974, Jerry and Eunice left California behind and moved their family to Oregon. After a few moves, they found their home in Molalla, Oregon, where they grew Christmas trees.

Jerry started working as a Sheet Metal Journeyman at Streimer Sheet Metal in Portland, Oregon. He was very talented and well-respected by his superiors and peers. Jerry retired from the trade in 2002.

Once Jerry and Eunice retired, they began to spend most of the year in Yuma, Arizona, but would return to Oregon during the summer months to visit family and friends. They were drawn to the area because many of Jerry's childhood friends from Hood River lived there seasonally. In 2020, they sold their home in Molalla and permanently called Yuma home.

Jerry had many hobbies. He built several remote-controlled airplanes and would fly them at the local flying field. He also restored a 1964 Ford Falcon and a 1969 Ford Mustang. He even built a sand car and enjoyed going to the dunes with family and friends. He also loved any dog he encountered, and through his love and dog treats, they soon became close friends.

One of Jerry's biggest passions was golf, and he played every week with friends.  During his retirement years, Jerry was on the golf course four days a week. It was also common to find a golf club in his hand putting and chipping around his yard.

He lived a full life doing everything he wanted while loving his family. His wife, daughters, and their families were his pride and joy.

Jerry is survived by his wife, Eunice Roberts, and daughters, Diane Ivy and Kari Schoonover (Ethan). He is also survived by five grandchildren: Nick Clifford (Tara), Bryce Clifford (Abbi), Matt Gunderson (Betsy), Sydney Murk, and Ryan Schoonover, along with two great-grandchildren, Carter and Parker Clifford.

The family will hold a private gathering in Oregon to celebrate Jerry's life, and in the fall, there will be a celebration of his life in Yuma, Arizona.
