Yuma

Obituary

Ron Adelsperger, 79, died on Wednesday, August 11 at his home in Yuma, AZ, following a lengthy battle with several serious health issues. His wife Sally was with him when he passed.

Russel Ronald "Ron" Adelsperger was born on May 15, 1942 at Mercy Hospital in Tiffin OH, to Russel and Zelda Adelsperger. He attended Tiffin schools, graduating from Columbian HS in 1960. He attended The Ohio State University briefly before enlisting in the US Army.  Ron served in the Army Security Agency, in signals intelligence.  At the height of the Cold War, he was deployed to Bad Aibling Station, a listening post in Bavaria, West Germany. We are thankful for his service and were pleased that in 2004, on a family trip to Germany, Ron visited his old base and enjoyed a friendly tour only weeks before it was closed for good by the Army.

After the military, he returned to Ohio where he met and married Kathy Viton. They were together for the next 43 years until her death. They started a family in Tiffin, first came Lisa and then later, Steve. Ron began what would be a lengthy phone company career with Ohio Bell.

In 1978 the family left Ohio for Oregon, and new adventures. Ron continued his career in Salem for Pacific NW Bell, US West and Quest. He played softball and coached his kids' teams in softball and baseball for years. He loved camping, fishing, and boating.  He eventually built a shop for woodworking and other projects.

Ron very much enjoyed RV travel. By the time he retired, he had moved on to fifth wheels and motorhomes while visiting favorite getaways like Tenmile Lake on the Oregon coast. He enjoyed regular – and bountiful – crabbing & fishing trips to the coast with good friends. He remained a die-hard fan of the Buckeyes, Browns, and Indians.

In 2010, Ron married Sally Cash, and began another life chapter. They enjoyed the snowbirding lifestyle and the fun of traveling together around the country. They settled in Yuma, AZ where they hosted many friends, and family.

We remember Ron for the way he enjoyed life. He loved people. He loved the outdoors, and the sunny warmth of Arizona. He enjoyed watching sports, grilling, and sharing good times with others. He was friendly, kind, and generous to all. Ron stayed positive and active despite coping with various ailments in recent years. He passed where he wanted to be, with Sally, and at home.

Ron was preceded in death by his parents and first wife Kathy. He is survived by wife Sally, her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren; by daughter Lisa Robbins (John) and son Steve Adelsperger (Jennifer) and by grandsons Joe, Ean and Bradley.

Ron's wishes were for his ashes to be interred at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland, OR. A memorial for family and friends will be held at a future date.
